+++ Jews from the ‘Kufiyas in Buchenwald’ campaign hold spontaneous vigil at the former Buchenwald concentration camp despite being banned +++

On Saturday, a group of Jews from the “Kufiyas in Buchenwald” campaign—including descendants of survivors of the Nazi genocide—gathered at the memorial site of the former Buchenwald concentration camp to hold a vigil highlighting the ongoing genocide in Palestine. Previously, the Weimar Administrative Court had upheld the ban on the campaign’s vigil to honor all victims and survivors of genocide and fascism,” which had been scheduled for April 12.

“The court wanted us to hold our vigil in the city of Weimar, side by side with Zionist counterprotesters. They intended to create a situation in which Zionist and anti-Zionist groups would face off in Weimar—where the perpetrators of Buchenwald lived—in order to divert attention from the Buchenwald memorial site itself,” said Tair B., organizer of the banned vigil. “We will not play along with their game. The memorial’s management must be held accountable for its ideological support of the Israeli genocide.”

The court’s ruling came following an emergency motion filed by the campaign to challenge the assembly authority’s original ban on holding the vigil in Buchenwald. In its ruling, the Administrative Court primarily relied on the arguments of the Buchenwald Memorial Foundation, asserting that the vigil planned in Buchenwald by the “Kufiyas in Buchenwald” campaign — where speeches by descendants of Nazi genocide survivors and Jewish prayers were to be recited — violated the dignity of the victims of Buchenwald by addressing “current crimes.”

“What actually violates the dignity of our families is exploiting their history to justify Germany’s current support for Israeli war crimes,” says Thomas G., son of an Auschwitz survivor. “With their authoritarian educational work, memorial sites like Buchenwald lay the groundwork for repression against a movement that takes to the streets in Germany to protest war and genocide.”

On Saturday, a group of Jews wearing T-shirts bearing the slogans “Jews Against Genocide” and “From Buchenwald to Gaza – Resistance until Liberation” gathered at the memorial to highlight the continuity of genocidal violence. At the vigil, they drew attention to the urgency of the situation in Palestine and surrounding countries, as well as to Germany’s ongoing complicity in Zionist war crimes.

“This memorial does not mandate the prevention and recognition of genocides as they occur. Instead, it portrays German fascism and the Nazi genocide as a singular and apolitical event to justify the German state’s political and economic support for the apartheid state of Israel while it commits genocide in Palestine,” says Rachael Shapiro of the International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network.

Am Samstag versammelte sich eine Gruppe von Jüd:innen aus der Kampagne ‘Kufiyas in Buchenwald’ – unter ihnen Nachfahren von Holocaustüberlebenden – in der Gedenkstätte des ehemaligen KZ Buchenwald, um bei einer Mahnwache auf den derzeitigen Völkermord in Palästina aufmerksam zu machen.  Zuvor hatte das Verwaltungsgericht Weimar das Verbot der “Mahnwache für die Opfer von Völkermord und Faschismus”, die für den 12. April vorgesehen war, bestätigt.

“Sie wollten, dass wir stattdessen in Weimar Seite an Seite mit zionistischen Protesten unsere Mahnwache abhalten. Dadurch sollte eine Situation konstruiert werden, bei der sich zionistische und antizionistische Gruppen in Weimar – wo die Täter von Buchenwald wohnten – gegenüberstehen, um von der Gedenkstätte selbst und ihrer Verantwortung abzulenken,” so Tair B. Anmelderin der verbotenen Mahwnache. “Das Spiel werden wir nicht mitspielen. Die Leitung der Gedenkstätte muss im Fokus sein und zur Verantwortung gezogen werden für ihre ideologische Unterstützung des israelischen Völkermords.”

Der Beschluss des Gerichts erfolgte nach einem Eilantrag seitens der Kampagne, um gegen das ursprüngliche Verbot der Versammlungsbehörde, die Mahnwache in Buchenwald abzuhalten, vorzugehen. Im Beschluss stützt sich das Verwaltungsgericht vornehmlich auf die Argumentation der Stiftung Gedenkstätte Buchenwald und behauptet, die in Buchenwald geplante Mahnwache der Kampagne ‘Kufiyas in Buchenwald’ — wo Reden von Nachfahren von Holocaustüberlebenden gehört und jüdische Gebete verlesen werden sollten — die Würde der Opfer von Buchenwald durch ein Ansprechen “aktueller Verbrechen” verletzte.  

“Was tatsächlich die Würde unserer Vorfahren verletzt, ist ihre Geschichte auszuhöhlen, um gegenwärtig die deutsche Unterstützung israelischer Gewalt zu rechtfertigen,” sagt Thomas G., Sohn eines Auschwitz-Überlebenden. “Mit ihren Handreichungen und ihrer autoritären Bildungsarbeit bilden Gedenkstätten wie die in Buchenwald die Grundlage für Repressionen gegen eine Bewegung, die in Deutschland gegen Krieg und Genozid auf die Straßen geht.”

Am Samstag versammelte sich eine Gruppe von Jüdinnen und Juden, die T-Shirts mit der Aufschrift “Jews Against Genocide” und “From Buchenwald to Gaza – Resistance until Liberation” trugen, in der Gedenkstätte, um die Kontinuitäten der Gewalt aufzuzeigen. Auf der Mahnwache machten sie auf die Dringlichkeit der Situation in Palästina und umliegenden Ländern, sowie auf die kontinuierliche Mitbeteiligung Deutschlands an Kriegsverbrechen aufmerksam. 

“Dieser Ort steht heute nicht für die Prävention und Anerkennung von Völkermorden während ihres Geschehens. Stattdessen stellt die Gedenkstätte den deutschen Faschismus als ein singuläres und unpolitisches Ereignis dar, um die politische und wirtschaftliche Unterstützung des deutschen Staates für den Apartheidstaat Israel zu rechtfertigen, während dieser in Palästina Völkermord begeht,” sagt Rachael Shapiro vom International Jewish Antizionist Network.

Agli/alle organizzatori/trici della campagna «Kufiyas a Buchenwald» è stato vietato dall’autorità competente per le riunioni di Weimar di svolgere una veglia prevista per il 12 aprile presso il memoriale. Il gruppo, che include diverse organizzazioni ebree e antifasciste, dichiara che l’obiettivo della riunione era commemorare le vittime del genocidio e del fascismo, onorare il giuramento di Buchenwald e riaffermare il dovere fondamentale di lottare contro tutte le forme di genocidio, in particolare contro quello attualmente in corso in Palestina. Il 30 marzo è però arrivato un provvedimento scritto di divieto da parte della polizia – un divieto che i responsabili della campagna intendono impugnare in tribunale.

«Il divieto della nostra veglia è solo l’ultimo capitolo della lunga storia della Germania di sfruttare il genocidio nazista per criminalizzare e mettere a tacere le voci critiche che si esprimono in solidarietà con la Palestina», ha dichiarato Tair B., portavoce della Voce Ebraica e una degli/delle organizzatori/trici della campagna. «Il divieto della kufiya e della nostra veglia dimostra che per il governo tedesco e la direzione di Buchenwald “Mai più” non significa “Mai più per nessuno”, ma “Di nuovo per alcuni”.»

La campagna è stata resa pubblica all’inizio dell’anno per contrastare il divieto di simboli di solidarietà come la kufiya, il ramo d’olivo e l’anguria presso il memoriale, nonché altre misure del sito che limitano la libertà di espressione sul genocidio in Palestina. Nel frattempo, le autorità tedesche continuano a sostenere, con ragionamenti assurdi, che il memoriale debba essere «apolitico» e che i parenti delle vittime del fascismo tedesco non onorerebbero la loro storia se si esprimessero contro i genocidi odierni.

«In quanto ebrei, queer e altri antifascisti – molti di noi figli e nipoti di sopravvissuti, nonché di persone perseguitate e uccise nel genocidio nazista – rifiutiamo con tutto il cuore che lo Stato tedesco detti le condizioni per la commemorazione», ha commentato Rachael Shapiro della Rete Ebraica Antisionista Internazionale. «Insistendo sull’unicità e sull’eccezionalizzazione del genocidio nazista compiuto contro gli ebrei d’Europa, Buchenwald e altri “luoghi della memoria” forniscono attivamente copertura alla partecipazione della Germania all’uccisione di massa dei palestinesi, anche attraverso il suo finanziamento.»

Ha proseguito: «Onoriamo l’eredità di coloro che hanno resistito ai nazisti organizzandoci oggi – per il diritto dei palestinesi a resistere al fascismo sionista, e per difendere il nostro obbligo morale di agire in solidarietà con loro.»

La campagna «Kufiyas a Buchenwald» impugna il divieto in tribunale e continua a difendere le sue rivendicazioni fondamentali – chiede alla Fondazione dei Memoriali di Buchenwald e Mittelbau-Dora di:

1. Affrontare apertamente il genocidio a Gaza presso il memoriale di Buchenwald.
2. Non vietare i simboli palestinesi al memoriale di Buchenwald e non denigrarli come antisemiti.
3. Non emettere divieti di ingresso o di parola nei locali a causa della solidarietà con la Palestina o della critica allo stato di apartheid di Israele.

La autoridad de reuniones de Weimar ha prohibido a l@s organizador@s de la campaña «Kufiyas en Buchenwald» llevar a cabo una vigilia prevista para el 12 de abril en el memorial. El grupo, que incluye varias organizaciones judías y antifascistas, declara que el objetivo de la reunión era conmemorar a las víctimas del genocidio y el fascismo, honrar el juramento de Buchenwald y reafirmar el deber fundamental de luchar contra todas las formas de genocidio, en particular contra el que actualmente tiene lugar en Palestina. La campaña «Kufiyas en Buchenwald» recurre la prohibición ante los tribunales y sigue defendiendo sus reivindicaciones fundamentales – exige a la Fundación de los Memoriales de Buchenwald y Mittelbau-Dora:

1. Abordar abiertamente el genocidio en Gaza en el memorial de Buchenwald.
2. No prohibir los símbolos palestinos en el memorial de Buchenwald ni denigrarlos como antisemitas.

Les organisateur·rices de la campagne « Keffiehs à Buchenwald » ont reçu de l’autorité chargée des rassemblements à Weimar l’interdiction de tenir une veillée prévue le 12 avril au mémorial. Le groupe, qui comprend plusieurs organisations juives et antifascistes, déclare que le rassemblement visait à commémorer les victimes du génocide et du fascisme, à honorer le serment de Buchenwald et à réaffirmer le devoir fondamental de lutter contre toutes les formes de génocide, en particulier contre celui qui se déroule actuellement en Palestine. Le 30 mars, un avis d’interdiction écrit de la police est toutefois parvenu – une interdiction que les responsables de la campagne entendent contester devant les tribunaux.

« L’interdiction de notre veillée n’est que le dernier chapitre de la longue histoire de l’Allemagne consistant à exploiter le génocide nazi pour criminaliser et faire taire les voix critiques qui s’expriment en solidarité avec la Palestine », a déclaré Tair B., porte-parole de la Voix juive et l’une des organisatrices de la campagne. « L’interdiction du keffieh et de notre veillée montre que pour le gouvernement allemand et la direction de Buchenwald, « Plus jamais ça » ne signifie pas « Plus jamais ça pour qui que ce soit », mais « À nouveau pour certains » »

La campagne a été rendue publique au début de l’année pour lutter contre l’interdiction des symboles de solidarité tels que le keffieh, le rameau d’olivier et la pastèque au mémorial, ainsi que contre d’autres mesures du site restreignant la liberté d’expression concernant le génocide en Palestine. Pendant ce temps, les autorités allemandes continuent d’affirmer, avec des raisonnements absurdes, que le mémorial doit être « apolitique » et que les proches des victimes du fascisme allemand ne rendraient pas hommage à leur histoire s’ils s’exprimaient contre les génocides d’aujourd’hui.

« En tant que juifs, queers et autres antifascistes – beaucoup d’entre nous enfants et petits-enfants de survivant·es ainsi que de personnes persécutées et assassinées lors du génocide nazi – nous refusons de tout cœur que l’État allemand dicte les conditions de la commémoration », a commenté Rachael Shapiro du Réseau juif antisioniste international. « En insistant sur le caractère unique et l’exceptionnalisation du génocide nazi perpétré contre les Juif·ves d’Europe, Buchenwald et d’autres « lieux de mémoire » couvrent activement la participation de l’Allemagne au meurtre de masse des Palestinien·nes, notamment par son financement. »

Elle a poursuivi : « Nous honorons l’héritage de celles et ceux qui ont résisté aux nazis en nous organisant aujourd’hui – pour le droit des Palestinien·nes à résister au fascisme sioniste, et pour défendre notre obligation morale d’agir solidairement avec elles et eux. »

La campagne « Keffiehs à Buchenwald » conteste l’interdiction devant les tribunaux et continue de défendre ses revendications fondamentales – elle demande à la Fondation des mémoriaux de Buchenwald et Mittelbau-Dora :

1. De traiter ouvertement du génocide à Gaza au mémorial de Buchenwald.
2. De ne pas interdire les symboles palestiniens au mémorial de Buchenwald et de ne pas les diaboliser comme antisémites.
3. De ne pas prononcer d’interdiction d’entrée ni de prise de parole en raison de la solidarité avec la Palestine ou de la critique de l’État d’apartheid d’Israël.

Organizers of ‘Kufiyas in Buchenwald’ Campaign Decry Ban on Planned Vigil

Local organizers of the ‘Kufiyas in Buchenwald’ campaign were banned from proceeding with a vigil registered for 12 April at the memorial site. The group, among it numerous Jewish and anti-fascist organizations, says the gathering intended to commemorate victims of genocide and fascism, honor the oath of Buchenwald, and uplift the fundamental duty to fight against all genocides, particularly the genocide currently taking place in Palestine. However, a written ban from the police was received on 30 March – a ban which the campaign leaders plan to challenge in court.

“The ban on our vigil is just the most recent chapter in Germany’s long history of exploiting the Nazi genocide to criminalize and silence critical voices speaking out in solidarity with Palestine,” said Tair B., spokesperson for Jüdische Stimme and one of the organizers of the campaign. “The ban on the kufiya and our vigil demonstrate that for the German government and the management of Buchenwald, ‘Never again’ does not mean ‘Never again for anyone,’ but rather ‘Again for some.’”

The campaign was launched earlier this year to oppose the banning of solidarity symbols such as the kufiya, olive branch, and watermelon at the memorial, as well as the site’s other actions limiting free speech about the genocide in Palestine.

Meanwhile, German authorities continue to make the absurd but typical claims that the memorial site be “apolitical,” and that relatives of the victims of German fascism fail to honor their histories through their opposition to the genocides of today.

“As Jewish, queer and other anti-fascists, many of us the children and grandchildren of survivors of and those persecuted and murdered in the Nazi genocide, we wholeheartedly reject the German state dictating conditions around commemoration,” commented Rachael Shapiro, an organizer with the International Jewish Antizionist Network. “Through their insistence on the singularity and exceptionalism of the Nazi genocide of European Jews, Buchenwald and other sites of ‘commemoration’ actively provide cover for Germany’s participation in and funding of the mass murder of Palestinians.”

She continued, “We honor the legacy of those who resisted the Nazis by organizing today — for the Palestinian right to resist ‘Israeli’ and Zionist fascism, and to defend our moral obligation to act in solidarity with them.”

The Kufiyas in Buchenwald campaign is currently challenging the ban in court and remains committed to its core demands – calling on the Buchenwald and Mittelbau-Dora Memorial Foundation to:

1. Openly address the genocide in Gaza at the Buchenwald Memorial.
2. Lift the ban on Palestinian symbols at the Buchenwald Memorial and cease the
denigration of them as anti-Semitic.
3. Lift all entry- or speaking bans on the premises due to solidarity with Palestine or
criticism of the apartheid state of Israel.

Organisator*innen der „Kufiyas in Buchenwald“ Kampagne verurteilen Verbot der geplanten Mahnwache. Rechtliche Schritte geplant.

Den Organisator*innen der Kampagne „Kufiyas in Buchenwald“ wurde von der Versammlungsbehörde in Weimar verboten, eine für den 12. April an der Gedenkstätte angemeldete Mahnwache durchzuführen. Die Gruppe, zu der mehrere jüdische und antifaschistische Organisationen gehören, erklärt, die Versammlung habe zum Ziel gehabt, der Opfer von Völkermord und Faschismus zu gedenken, den Schwur von Buchenwald zu ehren und die grundlegende Pflicht zum Kampf gegen alle Formen des Völkermords zu bekräftigen, insbesondere gegen den derzeit in Palästina stattfindenden Völkermord. Am 30. März ging jedoch ein schriftliches Verbot der Polizei ein – ein Verbot, gegen das die Kampagnenleiter vor Gericht vorgehen wollen.

„Das Verbot unserer Mahnwache ist nur das jüngste Kapitel in Deutschlands langer Geschichte, den Nazi-Genozid auszunutzen, um kritische Stimmen zu kriminalisieren und zum Schweigen zu bringen, die sich solidarisch mit Palästina äußern“, sagte Tair B., Sprecherin der Jüdischen Stimme und eine der Organisator*innen der Kampagne. „Das Verbot der Kufiya und unserer Mahnwache zeigt, dass für die deutsche Regierung und die Leitung von Buchenwald ‚Nie wieder‘ nicht ‚Nie wieder für niemanden‘ bedeutet, sondern ‚Wieder für manche‘.“

Die Kampagne wurde Anfang des Jahres öffentlich gemacht, um gegen das Verbot von Solidaritätssymbolen wie der Kufiya, dem Olivenzweig und der Wassermelone an der Gedenkstätte sowie gegen andere Maßnahmen des Ortes vorzugehen, die die freie Meinungsäußerung über den Völkermord in Palästina einschränken. Unterdessen behaupten die deutschen Behörden weiterhin unter absurder Argumentation, dass die Gedenkstätte „unpolitisch“ sein müsse und dass Angehörige der Opfer des deutschen Faschismus ihre Geschichte nicht würdigen würden, wenn sie sich gegen die Völkermorde von heute aussprechen.

„Als jüdische, queere und andere Antifaschist*innen – viele von uns Kinder und Enkelkinder von Überlebenden sowie von Menschen, die im Nazi-Völkermord verfolgt und ermordet wurden – lehnen wir es von ganzem Herzen ab, dass der deutsche Staat Bedingungen für das Gedenken diktiert“, kommentierte Rachael Shapiro von dem International Jewish Antizionist Network. „Durch ihr Beharren auf der Einzigartigkeit und der Exzeptionalisierung des Nazi-Genozids an den europäischen Jüd*innen bieten Buchenwald und andere ‚Gedenkstätten‘ aktiv Deckung für Deutschlands Beteiligung am Massenmord an Palästinenser*innen, u.a. durch die Finanzierung dessen.“

Sie fuhr fort: „Wir ehren das Vermächtnis derer, die sich den Nazis widersetzt haben, indem wir uns heute organisieren – für das Recht der Palästinenser*innen auf Widerstand gegen den zionistischen Faschismus, und um unsere moralische Verpflichtung zu verteidigen, solidarisch mit ihnen zu handeln.“

Die Kampagne „Kufiyas in Buchenwald“ geht gegen das Verbot vor Gericht vor und hält weiterhin an ihren Kernforderungen fest – sie fordert die Buchenwald- und Mittelbau-Dora Gedenkstiftung auf:

1. Eine offene Thematisierung des Völkermords in Gaza in der Gedenkstätte Buchenwald.

2. Kein Verbot palästinensischer Symbole in der Gedenkstätte Buchenwald und keine Verunglimpfung dieser als antisemitisch.

3. Keine Haus- und Sprechverbote wegen Palästina-Solidarität oder Kritik am Apartheidstaat Israel.
